As a general rule of thumb, if you are no good at matching colours, it is best to opt for a black three piece suit, because any colour of cummerbund will work well with it. 

For example, the most popular look is a white shirt, a black suit and a black cummerbund. However, if black or navy blue is a little understated for your tastes, pick something a little bolder like a scarlet or bottle green cummerbund.
